Gurugunta Community

Raichur, Karnataka

Establishment of the Community: 07.06. 2024

Inspired by the words of Pope Francis to "go to the peripheries," the Guanellian Sisters extended their mission to North Karnataka, reaching the remote village of Gurugunta in Raichur District, which belongs to the Diocese of Bellary. This area remains underserved, with high levels of illiteracy and limited awareness of current social and moral values.

The Sisters were invited to this mission by Rev. Fr. Robert Paul, and the community officially began its presence on 1st June 2024.

On 31st May 2024, Sr. Claudia, accompanied Sr. Prabha and Sr. Nirmala to Gurugunta. Upon arrival, they began cleaning and preparing their temporary residence, which consisted of three classrooms allocated for their stay.

On 6th June, Sr. Mary, Delegate Superior, arrived with Sr. Michael Rani Soosai to support the newly forming community. The following day, 7th June, Most Rev. Henry D’Souza, Bishop of Bellary, officially welcomed the Guanellian Sisters to the diocese and blessed their presence in this emerging mission. Thus, Sr. Prabha, Sr. Micheal Rani Soosai and Sr. Nirmala formed the pioneering members community followed by Sr. Stella Rani.  Chowramuthu.

Our Ministry in Gurugunta

The Sisters are currently engaged in teaching at Mount Carmel School and taking evening tuitions for the weak students and visiting the families.

After school hours, the Sisters dedicate their time to offering tuition classes for poor children in the village. These students typically struggle academically due to lack of support and resources. Through consistent teaching and encouragement, the Sisters have already witnessed notable improvement in the children’s academic performance.

At Gurugunta, the Sisters are committed to bringing education, healthcare, and compassionate service to the most marginalized.
