Guanellian Charism
Don Luigi Guanella was given by the Holy Spirit a filial and merciful heart, capable of experiencing God as “Abba Father”, who, rich in goodness and in providence wants to make of all men one single family. To him were opened the riches of the heart of Christ, thus to experience him as the everything of his life: brother, friend and redeemer. Religious congregations are distinguished by their own specific spirit and charism. The Guanellian spirit and charism can be characterized as a living family spirit. The sisters are, therefore, to acquire a profound spirit of union with God in order to nourish a genuine spirit of sacrifice, self-giving and dedication. These characteristics are the basic points on which the Guanellians live their own vocation.
To achieve this goal, the Daughters of St.Mary of Providence have to grow in prayer and nourish a strong bond of fraternal love among themselves. Knowing their own abilities as well as their own deficiencies, they support each other for a better and more effective result in caring for their needy brothers and sisters. To be a Guanellian means to carry the cross day after day with a spirit of self- renunciation. Strengthened by spiritual motivation the Daughters of St.Mary of Providence are working joyfully knowing that everything they do, for the least of the brothers, they are doing for the Lord.
Guanellian Spirituality
The spirituality of St. Luigi Guanella can be understood as a unique confluence of the spirituality of the “saints of charity” such as St. Francis of Assisi, St. Vincent de Paul, and St. Teresa of Calcutta (Mother Teresa), with the spirituality of the “saints of mystical contemplation” represented by St. Catherine of Siena and St. Teresa of Avila. For Fr. Guanella, a life and spirit of action and contemplation, as symbolized by the sisters St. Martha and St. Mary in the Gospels, served as the foundational cornerstones, which guided and sustained his ministry of charity along with his life of prayer. “Prayer and suffering” were to be the guideposts by which he and his followers actively lived this spirituality, and giving “Bread and the Lord” to those whom he served further exemplifies these ideals of action and contemplation.
Fr. Guanella’s spirituality centered on his serene trust and confidence in the loving providence of God, the Father. He believed that “God is Love” and that he is a loving Father who loves all of His children unconditionally, infinitely, and generously, and who provides and cares for all of His children calling each one to be “the instruments and hands” of His loving Providence, especially to the “least ones.” St. Luigi’s spirituality was also very Christo-centric, fixed strongly on the person of Jesus Christ in His Sacred Heart. It was in the Heart of Jesus that St. Luigi Guanella saw the “burning furnace of charity” which can enliven all of our souls, and which can inspire our every action in service to the poor and marginalized of society. Fr. Guanella instructed his followers to recognize in the poor and the “least ones” the face of Jesus Christ himself – an ideal similarly taught by St. Teresa of Calcutta both receiving their inspiration from the Gospel verse, “Whatever you do for one of these least brothers (and sisters) of mine you did for me.” (Matthew 25:40).

Guanellian Mission
Guanellian mission is desired for most abandoned people in the society. Guanellian vocation is apostolic in nature, which assimilates the mission of the founder as his/ her own, partaking in the life of Christ and in communion with the entire church. In the words of our founder “a Christian heart, which believes and is sensitive, cannot witness the needs of the poor without relieving them.” Our founder urges us to be disciples who consecrate themselves to God for the poor. The Guanellian families share a common mission and are jointly responsible according to the richness of the gift received from God. Guanellian mission is directed to evangelize the poor, to reveal the love of the father, to spread charity, to assist with works of mercy the poor of the gospel, especially the underprivileged children, the aged, the mentally handicapped.
