St. Mary of Providence Home – Formation House

ELURU, ANDRA PRADESH

Establishment of the Community : 08. 04. 2016

The Daughters of St. Mary of Providence (Guanellian Sisters) began recruiting young candidates from Andhra Pradesh while they were already serving in Vianney Prema Nilayam. Initially, these candidates were enrolled for Intermediate studies and accommodated in various hostels, those run by the Immaculate Heart of Mary Sisters (Pondicherry Blue Sisters).

To strengthen the formation program, the Sisters purchased a house with land in Vidhya Nagar on 3rd August 2011. However, the existing building on that land was not suitable for residence.

Due to the poor condition of the house purchased, the sisters continued living at Vianney Prema Nilayam and later rented a house in Vidhya Nagar on 3rd July 2014 to formally begin the initial formation program.

Sr. Esther was appointed in charge of the candidates, assisted by Sr. Usha. The first group consisted of eight candidates, who pursued their Intermediate studies at St. Anne’s College. In December 2014, the sisters began renovation and construction on the Vidhya Nagar property that had been purchased in 2011.

The newly renovated formation house was inaugurated on 8th April 2016 and dedicated to the initial formation of candidates, especially those from Odisha and Andhra Pradesh.

Community Life and Apostolate

In addition to formation activities, the Sisters engage in various pastoral and educational ministries:

  • Evening tuition classes for underprivileged children in the neighbourhood.

  • Parish involvement on weekends, including altar decoration and floral arrangements in the church

After Sr. Esther, Sr. Roseline and Sr. Joji took up the responsibility in the Formation House. It was the residence belonging to the community of Vianney Prema Nilayam and Sr. Shanthi served as the Superior.

Through their commitment to nurturing vocations and serving the local community, the Sisters of St. Mary of Providence remain a vibrant presence in Eluru, faithfully living the charism of their Founder, St. Louis Guanella.
